Diabetes and Your Eyes

Why Regular Eye Tests Are Essential for People with Diabetes

Living with diabetes can increase the risk of developing several eye conditions, even if your vision seems perfectly normal. High blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye, increasing the risk of serious eye disease.

At Almond Eyecare, we provide professional home eye tests for people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, delivering comprehensive eye care in the comfort of your own home. Many diabetic eye conditions develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages, making regular eye examinations essential.

A home eye test is different from your NHS Diabetic Eye Screening appointment — both are important and work together to protect your vision.

Two Important Appointments

Home Eye Tests and Diabetic Eye Screening Work Together

Your NHS Diabetic Eye Screening appointment looks specifically for signs of diabetic retinopathy by taking photographs of the retina. A comprehensive eye examination looks at your overall vision and eye health, checks your spectacle prescription, and assesses for common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Both appointments are important, and if you are eligible for diabetic eye screening, you should continue attending your regular screening appointments alongside your routine eye examinations.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. If diabetes or reduced mobility makes it difficult to visit a high street optician, you may be eligible for a fully-funded NHS home eye test. We'll confirm eligibility before the appointment.
No — they are different but complementary. Diabetic eye screening photographs the retina to look specifically for diabetic retinopathy. A home eye test covers your overall vision, eye health, and glasses prescription. You should continue with both.
We recommend at least every two years, or more frequently if you have existing eye conditions or notice changes in your vision. We'll advise on the right schedule after the first visit.
Yes — fluctuating blood sugar levels can cause changes in your vision and glasses prescription, particularly around the time of diagnosis or when blood sugar is poorly controlled. Regular eye tests help keep your prescription up to date.
