About Macular Degeneration

Understanding Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of sight loss in older adults. It affects the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — making activities such as reading, recognising faces, and watching television more difficult.

At Almond Eyecare, we provide professional home eye tests for people living with macular degeneration, allowing you to receive expert eye care in the comfort of your own home. We offer comprehensive eye examinations, helping to monitor your eye health and identify any changes in your vision.

Early detection of wet AMD is particularly important, as timely referral can help preserve vision and improve treatment outcomes.

Signs and Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

  • Blurred or distorted central vision
  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Straight lines appearing wavy
  • Difficulty recognising faces
  • Reduced colour perception
  • A dark or blurred patch in the centre of vision
  • Sudden vision changes — seek urgent advice

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. If your AMD makes it difficult to travel, you may be eligible for a fully-funded NHS home eye test. We'll confirm eligibility before the appointment.
Dry AMD develops slowly and currently has no cure, though progression can be monitored. Wet AMD involves abnormal blood vessel growth and requires urgent treatment to prevent rapid vision loss.
We recommend at least annually, or more frequently if there are changes in your vision. Regular monitoring helps detect progression early and ensures timely referral when needed.
Sudden changes in vision may indicate wet AMD and require urgent medical attention. Please contact us or your GP immediately if you notice sudden distortion or loss of central vision.
